Budding Bookworms: Chester Elementary students pursue a passion for reading

Fifth graders in Pamela Cinque’s class made their way down to the library Wednesday morning for their weekly trip to pick out their next best read. Students in Ms. Cinque’s class read every day after school, updating their reading logs to show their progress.

Every student at Chester Elementary School participates in this initiative, which allows students to explore their passion for reading while diving into various genres. Librarian Patricia Hallman assists with lessons and finding books for the younger grades, instilling a strong interest for reading early in their educational journeys. The library at Chester Elementary offers a variety of selections including fiction, non fiction, fantasy, mystery, history, social sciences, fairy tales and more.

“I love that my students get to pick a book that they are interested in and that they can bring home to enjoy,” Ms. Cinque said. “It is an important piece of our students' school experience because it further promotes a love of reading!”

Reading is an essential part of learning, as it boosts brain power by improving focus, memory and analytical skills while also expanding vocabulary. Additionally, it strengthens writing, problem solving and communication skills.

Fifth grader Shirel Vargas is eager to dive into the “Redwall” series, a fantasy novel written by Brian Jacques with over twenty novels and several picture books. The stories follow the brave wilderness creatures as they defend their home from villains such as rats, weasels and foxes.

Shirel is starting with the fourth book in the series, “Mariel of Redwall,” after reading a summary about the novel that piqued her interest. Her plan after finishing “Mariel of Redwall” is to go back and read the first book in the series, “Redwall.”

"What I enjoy about going to the library is that I get to find new books that really interest me,” Shirel said. “It really builds the mind and memory. I get inspired because you’re always learning.”

This initiative aligns with the district goals of a welcoming and inclusive learning environment and developing innovative, data-driven instruction by transforming the library into a space where students can grow a love for reading.
