‘Tis the season for early action, instant decision and the start of the next chapter for seniors at Chester Academy, as they begin to apply and receive college acceptance offers from universities throughout the country.

Faculty and staff at Chester Academy help seniors and their families with the college application process in a variety of ways. Most recently, the school hosted SUNY Orange Instant Decision Day, where seniors had the opportunity to meet Admissions Officers and explore what the university offers.

SUNY Instant Decision Days offer a unique opportunity for seniors to instantly receive an admissions decision on the spot. This allows students to ease uncertainty and take an important step towards planning their futures. The next SUNY Instant Decision Day will be for SUNY Rockland on December 8.

“It definitely did relieve a little bit of stress because now I know I’ll always have that as an option,” said senior Paige Niles, who attended SUNY Orange Instant Decision Day and was accepted into the school. “I got a little more insight from the pamphlet, which was good.”

Chester Academy also helps families with FAFSA federal student aid applications, which includes grants, loans and work-study opportunities. Representatives from the SUNY Orange Financial Aid Office attend to answer any questions families may have.

The district also partners with SS Seward Institute in Florida, New York, to further assist with the application process during their annual Financial Aid Night. Here, representatives from Marist University explain the Financial Aid process to seniors and their parents. The next session will be at Chester Academy in the Fall of 2026.

Throughout the school year, School Counselor Yvonne Sternemann will meet with juniors and seniors individually to ensure that they meet graduation requirements, as well as go over the college application process and scholarships. Additionally, the school consistently posts information for seniors about scholarships sponsored by local organizations and individuals. “Chester Academy offers multiple opportunities to support students as they research and apply to both community and four year colleges,” Ms. Sternemann said. “We are committed to ensuring  that every student has guidance and resources necessary to successfully navigate the college admissions process.”

12th grade English teacher Patricia Rivas also prepares students for the college application process by reviewing their essays and coordinating mock interviews outside of class. This provides students with constructive, individualized feedback that helps them feel more confident as they begin their path to college.
