Students from first through fifth grade at Chester Elementary School congregated at the cafeteria on Friday, September 13, 2024, for the first Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) assembly of the year. During the assembly, students reviewed various ways they can earn chips through positive actions to try and win prizes.

“PBIS kickoff assemblies establish our expectations for the year,” said Mary Kate Boesch, Principal at Chester Elementary. “It’s an exciting time for everyone to come together and celebrate at our first assembly. We look forward to a successful PBIS year at CES and all students being ready, responsible, respectful, and safe.”

The event opened with a warm welcome from physical education teacher Kaitlin Moran, who was emcee. After greeting the audience, she addressed the importance of showing what it means to be respectful, responsible, ready and safe in all areas of the school.

“Kickoff was a success,” said Ms. Moran. “It’s really just to give the kids a refresher of what is expected, behavior wise, and how they get rewarded for it. They are really excited about earning prizes with their classes, and a lot of times, if they ever have a choice, they pick the prize for their entire class; which is really cool to see too.”

Throughout the assembly, students were rewarded with chips for sitting politely and listening to others. They learned other ways they can earn chips for themselves and how their entire grade can earn rewards for their positive behavior during lunch and recess. Students who earned 10 chips had the chance for their name to be picked and spin the wheel for a special prize.

Before heading back to their classrooms, students had a dance party, jumping around with their peers with smiles from ear to ear.

“What I learned in the PBIS assembly was how to be respectful and safe,” said Francesca Oliveri, a fourth grader in Jeffery Knight’s class. “My favorite part was when the other people got to spin the wheel and the dance party.”
