Local entrepreneurs share words of wisdom with Chester Academy students

Juniors and seniors at Chester Academy gathered in the Maker Space on Wednesday afternoon to hear from local entrepreneurs, who shared advice about starting a business, and the obstacles they overcame to be their own boss.

Edin Guzman from Automotive Ingenuity HD, Barbara Martinez from HV Business Link and Fusion Eye Wear, Bryan Junior from Bryan Junior Entertainment Inc., Phill Whitbeck from Light Speed Restoration and Whitbeck Building & Design Inc. and Wendy Javier from I Choose Me Too Corp. discussed their professional journeys with students.

The session started with each individual sharing background about their business, as well as what inspired them to dive into the industry that they are passionate about. Many spoke about the hardships of being an entrepreneur, such as long hours and late nights.

“If you’re going to do this; do it with passion, put your all into it, don’t give up because it’s going to get hard,” said Ms. Martinez to students. “Know that you don’t have to do it by yourself. Get yourself the right network and surround yourself with the right people.”

Students were able to ask questions and share their business ideas with the panel. Many of the panelists shared words of inspiration and motivation to students, assuring them to shoot for the moon, because even if they miss, they will land among the stars.

“I want to learn how to build a business in automotive,” said Adrian Bignall, a junior at Chester Academy. “I want to maybe open my own shop, help people fix their cars. When they spoke about not letting things discourage you, that really gave me an idea of how to operate my business, because sometimes I get discouraged easily.”

Giving students the opportunity to hear from local entrepreneurs provides them with a unique insight into the reality of self-employment and how much goes into starting a successful business. It also allows students to start networking with local businesses and creating connections that will help them professionally. Thank you to Workplace Learning Coordinator Jennifer Burretto, who put together this event.
